PetVivo Acquires Piezo BioMembrane and Its Electricity-Generating Cartilage Technology

Sep 8, 2026

PetVivo Holdings, a veterinary biotech and biomedical device company focused on osteoarthritis in dogs and horses, has acquired Piezo BioMembrane (PBM), a startup developing a biodegradable implant designed to convert the natural movement of a joint into electrical energy. That electrical charge is intended to help stimulate cartilage regeneration from within the body. The technology was invented by UConn mechanical engineering professor Than Nguyen, who founded PBM in 2021.

Unlike conventional piezoelectric materials, which are often hard and brittle ceramics, Nguyen’s lab developed flexible, biodegradable forms designed to break down naturally in the body. The technology has also demonstrated potential for applications including wound healing, tissue regeneration, implanted force sensors, targeted drug delivery, and tumor treatment.
